Masayoshi is a former member of the Gotei 13 who dedicated his life to hunting down Hollows in Soul Society after a traumatic incident led to the death of his wife. He possesses a strong sense of justice and often shoulders the burdens of those he could not save. With a serious demeanor, he struggles with the guilt of his past, particularly the loss of his loved ones. Despite his serious nature, he shares a warm relationship with his friend Yachiru and has a soft spot for sweets. As a skilled swordsman, he exhibits considerable combat abilities but battles internally with the Hollow that possesses him.
